This year's main event is already a history maker with the final table being delayed until November, never before has there been such a reward for making a final table and never as big a chance to get such huge publicity.
Last year's main event was won by American Jerry Yang and he is as good an example as any for why the WSOP main event is about as an unique event as there is in the world. Yang had not won a poker event before last year's event and has yet to win another one after, but that does not matter. He did win the Main event last year and the prize for that was $8,250,000. His next biggest tournament cash after that is $6,985!
Yang is the example of an amateur winning an event that is supposed to be the World Championship and ultimate prize in the game. This is becoming more and more common as the fields for the main event are now so huge, last year there were 6,358 entries, and that was a drop from the year before. It is anticipated that the field and prize pool will once again increase this year. With such large fields the percentage of professional players drops dramatically compared to other WSOP events and with so many hands to play, avoiding a terminal bad beat is very tough to do even for the very best players out there.
This will not mean that the tables will not be packed full of the very best names in poker, and rubbing shoulders with them will be online qualifiers, celebrities looking for a dream ticket to a new career or people who just have more money than sense. It is the reason why the main event is so dramatic and so anticipated.
