When the Swedish government paired with Svenske Spel to launch a sponsored and regulated online poker environment for their citizens they got plenty of attention, which they have used to good effect. Now that foreign markets are casting their eye on the Swedish online poker market, however, steps are being taken to block their path.
The scuttlebutt is that Swedish finance minister Anders Borg is considering tough regulations and high taxes to discourage foreign competition to Svenske Spel. This tact is being considered after European Union action taken to loosen up the give and take of goods and services in member nations.
