London’s Gutshot Club to close
September 16, 2008 - Thomas Clarke
The Gutshot Poker Club (also known as The Gutshot Poker Collective or simply The Gutshot) is a poker club, bar, restaurant and internet cafe located on Clerkenwell Road, London, England. The club opened in March 2004, and since claims almost 25,000 members. The founders of the Gutshot Club are Barry Martin and Derek Kelly.
The Gutshot has seen many an unknown face start playing at the club and turn into a household name. Some of the examples are Tiffany Williamson, the highest placed female finisher in the WSOP main event. Roland De Wolfe, the first player to win a WPT and EPT event and WSOP bracelet winner Praz Bansi. That is just naming a few!
The club has also seen the superstars of the poker world sit at its tables. WSOP main event champions Phil Hellmuth Jr, Chris Ferguson, Chris Moneymaker, Greg Raymer and Joe Hachem have all played at the club. Although only being open for 4 years the club really has a huge amount of history behind it.
The legal fight for Gutshot has been well documented, on 16 January 2007; the owner of the club was convicted of contravening the Gaming Act. The jury in the case rejected Derek Kelly's contention that poker was a game of skill, and thus exempt from the Gaming Act. Derek Kelly appealed this verdict at the Royal Court of Appeal in London but failed. All subsequent appeals have failed and now the club is closing.
However in true Gutshot fashion they would like to celebrate their closing in style by having a tournament that has always proved very popular amongst their members; the £5 rebuy.
Kicking off at 8pm it will be just like the old days with poker tables all over the club and rebuys a plenty. If the current interest levels are anything to go by it should be a roadblock and break their previous record number of runners that currently stands at 181.
After Wednesday Gutshot would like you to support a new club that is local to them in Old Street which is called The International Club (www.theintclub.com). It will have some very familiar faces as many of their staff will be moving over as well, their opening night which is Thursday 18th September with doors opening at 7pm.
