World Series of Golf Champion Crowned
May 18, 2007 - Chris Welsh

A man named Ewing has become the first champion of the World Series of Golf, but despite the sport’s popularity with pro athletes from other sports, it wasn’t that Ewing. Mark Ewing, 31, is a day trader from Newport Beach, CA, and he topped the field and beat out Rhett Butler, Phil Ivey and plenty more poker pros in this poker inspired golf tournament.
The WSOG blended elements of tournament poker with a round of golf, rife with betting and bluffing and trying to collect all the cash. Ivey and Butler were the only two poker pros to make it to the final round- Ivey (sometimes referred to as the “Tiger Woods of Poker”) and his golf game have become something of an obsession among fellow poker pros recently.
The World Series of Golf will be broadcast nationally on NBC Sports June 23 and 24.
