Poker strategy: Bubble Play

In a poker tournament, the "bubble" is the point in the game at which the next player out will not win any money, but the rest of the players will be chips in.

Bankroll and chip stack

If you have an ample bankroll at the time and are not relying on cashing to stay afloat then you are obviously going to be able to take more risks to pick up chips from those people who are indeed playing tighter because they are desperate for the cash. While also if you have a monster chip count and are lying in the top 3 or 4 positions then you can also afford to risk some chips to gain those from the people who are playing tight.

Be aggressive in good positions

You will encounter players who are trying to just sit tight and hope that others get knocked out so that they can just float into the money. If you pick good late positions and even players who are showing weakness then a raise with medium hands or even weak hands should be enough to take down the blinds, which at this point should be quite sizeable. If you find that a weak player re-raises you then you should be good enough to lay it down and find a better situation to get those chips back.
 
Don't get short-stacked and go for the win!

If you are one of the players who has a smaller stack then still try to be aggressive, if you get too small stacked then it is going to be very difficult to steal the blinds as you are likely to be called, make sure that you try to steal before your stack is too small. Also if you feel that you have someone beat then put in a re-raise and go for the win, don't settle for sneaking into the money, always look for the big prize as even if you don't hit the top spot the rewards for coming close are better. Remember aim for the stars and you might hit the moon!
