Roland de Wolfe first dabbled in the world of gambling when he played pool and snooker for money as a teenager. He took a journalism course after school and developed his interest further in gambling when he was hired to work on Inside Edge magazine, soon rising through the publishing ranks to become the mag's poker editor. He put his observation of covering poker events to good use when he decided to stop writing about what others were doing on the tables and take a seat himself.

"I just became more and more involved in the playing," De Wolfe said in 2004. "Travelling to tournaments and reading about the game, when you're around all these people playing, you speak to them you learn and the more you play the more experience you get."

His first notable win came in a pot limit texas hold'em event at London's Gutshot Club festival in 2004. This was the start of a run that led him to his first major title when he won the World Poker Tour Grand Prix de Paris in July 2005, seeing off the previous year's winner Juha Helpi heads-up.

If such an accolade was not enough De Wolfe then went on to take third place in the Fourth Annual Five-Star World Poker Classic in Las Vegas in 2006 where he won a prize in excess of $1million behind Canadian David Matthew (2nd place) and American Joe Batholdi Jr (1st place).

However the poker world really sat up and took notice of him when he became the first person to win championship events on the WPT and EPT, when he won the Irish Masters in Dublin in October 2006 beating a final table that included 2nd David Tavernier (French), 3rd William Thorson (Swedish), 4th Gavin SImms (English), 5th George McKeever (Irish), 6th Robert Yong (English), 7th Nick Slade (English), 8th Patrick Bueno (French) and 9th Willie Tann (English).

De Wolfe is now a familiar face on televised tournaments as his extravagant dress sense and aggressive play at the table make him a firm fan favourite. He recently finished runner-up on channel 4's Late Night Poker show and captained the England team (Neil Channing, Surinder Sunar, Joe Beevers, Ian Frazer and PartyPoker.com online qualifier Charlie Durbin) to a crushing victory in the PartyPoker.com Nations Cup.
