The Gist: Some have labeled Poker Kings a bit of a wet noodle when it comes to quality film, but for the poker fan what could be better than 52 minutes of behind the scenes preparation and play in the World Series of Poker? Five pro poker players (Simon Trumper, Garry Bush, Rob Varkonyi, Carlo Citrone and the lovable “Poker Brat” Phil Hellmuth) are followed for one year leading up to their bid for the $2.5 million prize.
The value of watching these particular five is that it gives a number of different views on the life of pro poker player. For Trumpter, there are a few pitfalls illustrated, for Varkonyi it is the story of the every day guy becoming a pro, and for Hellmuth…well, it’s Phil Hellmuth.
While more and more poker centered TV is beginning to cover more of poker life than what happens in the casino, there is still a dearth of material that takes the time to get fairly deep. As such, anyone even thinking about becoming a pro player would benefit from seeing this film.
