Other Poker TV Shows
Besides the Big Three (WPT, WSOP, CPS) there are plenty of other poker shows, from the occasional one-off documentary to a Sixty Minutes special to up and coming poker series. Below are a few of the more interesting.
Poker Royale
20 table cameras capturing all the angles on poker pros and celebrities as they battle each other in No Limit Texas Hold’em is the idea behind Poker Royale. With team-style formats, such as Battle of the Sexes and Comedians versus Poker Pros, this Game Show Network program offers good poker entertainment and plenty of smack talk between the players. In this venue poker fans have the chance to watch their favorite poker personalities battle it out in a more relaxed setting geared towards having fun.
E! Hollywood Hold’em
Part Cribs and part Celebrity Poker Showdown, E! Hollywood Hold’em combines the best of voyeuristic, star-curious fun with playing poker in interesting environments. Hosted by none other than Phil “The Unabomber” Laak, the show consists of a game hosted at a celebrities’ pad, played with a bunch of their buddies and a few more celebrities to keep it interesting. Phil shows up with camera crew in tow, the audience gets treated to a mini tour of the star’s home, and then its off to a back room where the table and chips are set up, and the game gets underway. This show is a great deal of fun as a poker-related diversion.
Poker Dome
Calling up images of Mad Max and the Old West all at once, the new Fox Sports show Poker Dome is far more high-tech than either. In a building constructed specifically for the show, the Poker Dome separates its players from the audience with one-way glass and soundproofing, isolating them in their “natural” environment. Putting on the pressure is a “shot clock” for Speed Poker games, where players only have 15 seconds to make a decision, ensuring plenty of hands will be played each show. The first year’s season will culminate in a Mega Event to be held at the Crown Casino in Melbourne, Australia; six players will put up ten million each, and the winner will walk with all $60 million. Let the games begin!
