Chris Ferguson is one the most instantly recognizable players at a poker table. His long hair and beard have given him the nickname "Jesus" alongside his outstanding play and perhaps the miracles he performs with the cards.
Ferguson grew up in California and has to thank his father for his remarkable poker abilities as his parents both have doctorate degrees in mathematics, more interestingly though, his father advanced in statistics and game theory at the UCLA. Ferguson followed in his parents footsteps and has a PhD in computer science in which he graduated in 1999.
Having already cashed three times at the WSOP in 1998 and 1999, which included two final table appearances, Ferguson had a remarkable WSOP in 2000. He not only cashed four times but he won two bracelets including the main event, which gave him a first prize of $1.5 million.
The final hand of that main event win was the now infamous Ace 9 of Ferguson v the Ace Queen of American TJ Cioutier. Remarkably Ferguson rivered a 9 and got himself into the record books where he so rightly belongs.
"Some people might think that there is one basic way to play poker, but there isn't. There are many different styles of play," Ferguson says. "Two people may be dealt the same hand, play it quite differently, and yet both will be successful."
Ferguson is still one of the most popular players to watch out for, appearing on television regularly and also playing online at Full Tilt Poker.com which he helped set up. Indeed he showed his true class by starting from $0 and turning that into $10,000 in the space of 11 months before giving all his winnings to charity.
He is still as dangerous as ever as a player with a third place in the massive Event 2 of the 2008 WSOP - the $1,500 No Limit Hold'em event - which had just under 4,000 runners.
